BUILT BY: Originally hand-built by Rob Metz and Mark Thompson for RMTBC. Timewarp and Frankenfurter reinstated by the Rotorua Trails Trust.
GETTING THERE: At the summit of Moerangi Road - on one side Bush Road leads off to Kung Fu Walrus trail, and on the opposite side is the Timewarp trail climb which takes you to a trig and the beginning of Frankenfurter trail.
Alternatively, you can take Loop road just before the top of Moerangi road which is a gentle descent to Riff Raff and Rocky Horror (skipping the Time Warp climb, and Frankenfurter descent).
TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Although often referred to as Rocky Horror, or just Rocky, there are separate trails, each with their own distinctive identity:
Frankenfurter. Descending through a series of swooping turns and straights with potential for high speed, Frankenfurter is littered with many natural terrain features. Able to be ridden at a sedate pace, those features become challenging when hitting them at increased speed.
After the first section in the open the trail ducks into mature plantation forest which adds a few rooty sections to the mix, warming you up for what's to come in the next section - Riff Raff trail.
Riff Raff. Frankenfurter crosses Loop road and heads directly into Riff Raff. This section of trail is gnarly with steep dropping corners, big rooty sections and some challenging drop offs.
Rocky Horror. The going gets rocky here, hence the name. One of the few areas of Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa forest with something other than dirt and tree roots - the boulders are moss covered and unforgiving.
Overall, it's a very technical trail with some extremely steep sections. Although it's a different flavour to the grade 5 tracks in the native bush like Kataore, Rocky Horror will appeal to the same riders that relish the challenge of a steep, tricky track.
GETTING OUT: The trail loops around onto the bottom section of Pondy New, follow it through to join up to Rollercoaster and Moonshine.
