The Whirinaki Forest Park Mountain Bike Tracks were purpose built and weave through one of the most spectacular and interesting forests in the world - ancient, awesome, magnificent, Jurassic Park-like are some of the words used to describe this unique chunk of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

• DOC opened the first loop in August 2006. This track is designed for the eco mountain bike rider and requires a medium fitness and skill level (grade 2-3). It is 16km long and most people complete it in 2-4 hours (shorter portions of the track can also be ridden)

• In September 2009 a more challenging option was unveiled - the 35km Moerangi Trail. Check the full details here

  • The Whirinaki Forest Park is about 100km south east of Rotorua on State Highway 38. It is within a two hour drive of Rotorua, Taupo and Whakatane.

Hi everyone, just a quick heads up - as at 1 June 2011, we (DOC) are advising to give the Moerangi a miss - last weeks weather bomb through the area has created some slip issues which we are currently assessing (especially through the Moerangi saddle and either side of Rogers Hut). We should have a full picture and plan of attack next week, so will let you all know then or call our Visitor Centre 07 366 1080. Cheers, Mike

Great track, great climing and decending, stunning bush. For experienced riders, be well prepared and enjoy a stunning ride.

Moerangi track is awesome but hard. Gets better every time you do it.
