GRADE: 3  LENGTH: 1.5km

BUILT: in 2004 by Pat Tickelpenny, Mark Smith and Murray Avery.

Major rebuild by Pat and the Rotorua Mountain Bike Club in 2011/12 after logging in the area.

GETTING THERE: Starting from the skid site at the end of Spruce Rd (you get there via Katore Jumps or another favourite, Paddy's Run (formerley called A Trail).

TRAIL DESCRIPTION:

The Tickler has a fast section at the start, dropping down to the creek. This section was revised in September 2012, to bypass the orgiginal entrance section. This was techical and suffered from rain and braking ruts making it harder than the grade 3 designation of the trail.

Shortly after the creek crossing there is a short but tricky pinch climb to a clearing with a few of the remaining Californian Redwoods from the orignal stand of forest. Take a moment here and keep your eyes and ears open. One of the NZ native falcons released in 2013 has been making itself at home in this area.

The next stage follows the profile and style of the original trail which was lost in the 2011 harvesting activity. It is a gradual climb from the stand of Redwoods – no steep sections, just a gradual climb that winds its way up.

Normally handles wet weather well. The occasional hard frost in the middle of winter can make it slippery as the frozen surface softens during the day.

GETTING OUT: Finishes at the water tap on the intersection of Red Tank Rd, Direct Rd, Pipeline Rd. The Tickler is a good way to get here to head further outback.

Or you can hang a right and you are 20m away from the start of B Rude Not 2 trail.

Or if you're shuttling, head to your right down Red Tank Rd, take the first trail on your left - Bunny Juggs which will aim you back down Pipeline Rd. towards the shuttle pickup point.

RIDERS COMMENTS:

Biked this trail today, early November, in 22 degree heat. Very stumpy and dry on trail. With no shelter it wasn't pleasant. Will avoid in winter as well because it is very sheltered and will be freezing. Second half was better than the first half.

Thanks Linda, we are inclined to agree. Best ridden in Spring and Autumn for these reasons. Editor, RideRotorua.com

Note that this trail was logged in 2011 (yes, all the massive redwoods. The nice stream area etc is all gone too). However the track is still there and riding OK.
