How many stars do you give this trail?

On State Highway 1 a few kilometres north of Taupo are the Craters of the Moon mountain bike trails.

There are many options, not all of which are obvious at first glance. There are pockets of brilliant flowing trails designed by the Taupo club, and a few kilometres of forestry roads to explore. Here are some ways to do it:

For a good long ride, park at the Taupo Events Centre in Spa Rd. I know, it is nowhere near the trail system but hear me out: ride down the road opposite the Events Centre, heading north. At the end of this road you will find the trailhead for the MTB trail that follows the Waikato River to Huka Falls. It is a great trail, and gets you to the bridge over the falls. Cross the river, head through the car park and up to the highway via the marked singletrack climb. This leads to a very awesome tunnel under the highway which will get you to the trail system.

Another option (possibly easier to find) is to turn off from SH1 at Craters of the Moon. You can turn left or right: left means you can park at the Hub Café, next to the giant helicopter, and have a coffee and food before and/or after riding. From there you can access the tunnel. They have maps at the café. If you go right about 200m up there you will see stables on the right. Turn left on to a dirt road immediately after that and you will see a large dirt car park.

On the east side there is a ramp that will drop you down across a road and into a trail called Tourist Trap, turn left onto the trail. This trail is very cool, and leads to another called the Bumblebee, if you turn left where the trail marked Tourist Trap goes right. The TT is a complete loop. After TT you should head south on a firebreak. It intersects a road, turn right on to it. This road leads you through the edge of the thermal area called Craters of the Moon. Pretty cool, steaming vents close to the road. You will come to a gate on the right with a sign announcing the trails. Consult your map. There are hours of trails out there, and more you will find on your way back.
