GRADE: 2/3   LENGTH: 1.3km

BUILT: in 2006 by Murray Avery, Mark Smith and the Rotorua Mountain Bike Club.

GETTING THERE: Most often ridden after Split Enz and Pondy Downhill, you can also access Pondy New by riding from the 8 Mile Gate entry to the forest, over Yellow Brick Road Trail and up Sandy Skid Rd.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Pondy New creates a wonderful loop connecting Split Enz and Pondy Downhill to Rollercoaster. After a short by steady climb in it's all flowy gentle downhill except for the very end where it climbs up to join onto the end of Rollercoaster.

There are large sections of this you can just pump - and lay of the brakes if you carry momentum. Getting this right from corner to corner is a great feeling.

The last section is relatively tricky and technical - a short root-infested climb and descent, a few rocks, then a narrow bridge followed a couple of climbs to where the trail connects to the last part of Rollercoaster.

It is a favourite for many and is a great complement to the style of the immensely popular Split Enz trail.

Helmet cam footage is supplied by Australian Mountain Bike Magazine

Mapping thanks to Magellan GPS NZ (includes Rollercoaster section).

GETTING OUT: Where Pondy New joins Rollercoaster you are faced with two choices:

To the right - this is where Rollercoaster comes in, don't ride up there - it's a one way trail.

To the left is a reinstated old exit to Ring Rd. This exit can get confusing so don't take it unless you're confident you can link up to your next trail.

Straight ahead is Rollercoaster trail. Follow this out all the way, or take the Moonshine trail turnoff towards the end of it and you'll end up on Reservoir Rd. Right up Reservior Rd. takes you to the shuttle pickup point, or a left takes you to the 8 Mile Gate entry to the forest.
