The Challenge Mini Network is comprised of four tracks: Challenge, Challenge Roadside, Down the Guts, and Boulderdash.

GRADE: 3  LENGTH: 0.8KM

BUILT BY: Originally built in 1993 by Fred Christensen. Completely rebuilt in 2011/12 by Empire of Dirt for the Rotorua Mountain Bike Club after the area was harvested.

GETTING THERE: Entrance to all the Challenge Block trails is from the high point of Radio Hut Rd.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: The Club’s brief for the extensive rebuild of the trail was to retain the shape, length and the style of the original as much as possible. While following the original line it now features a lot more berms, rollers and jumps (all safely table-topped) while still retaining the flowing nature of the original.
The trail is very popular with riders of all abilities. The jumps are designed to be safe to roll over at slow speed, but as rider's speed increases so does their ability to clear the tabletops.

GETTING OUT: Drop out to the left at the end of the initial descent and you'll be at the intersection of Pohaturoa and Nursery roads and the entrance to The Dipper, another Whakarewarewa Forest original trail.
From here you can continue up Nursery Road hill to do more trails in the Challenge Block.

Or you can stay on Challenge Roadside which continues downhill at a more gentle inclination to eventually exit on Puhaturoa Road.

There is another option as well, (all clearly signposted), to take a right turn and head onto the climb and subsequent descent of the second half of the Challenge trail.

Please ride within your limits, and be aware that trails can change with weather and heavy use from race events effecting their difficulty. Ride Rotorua will in no way be liable for any injury or damages arising from riding any of the trails listed on the Ride Rotorua website.

RIDERS COMMENTS:

Amazing jump track. Ten out of ten.

The Rotorua Mountain Bike Club's brief is to restore the trails in a similar style, shape and length as the originals. This does not seem to have happened...

Reply from the Editor of Ride Rotorua: "Fred - that isnt quite true. The Club can build anything it likes so long as the start and finish points are pretty much the same. In the case of Challenge the trail down the side of Nursery was a no brainer - that went in straight away (but better - we believe). For the rest - it didn't make sense to have the up-down-up-down trail it used to be, given we dont need to make use of every inch of forest we get, so it was decided to have one 'up' and two 'downs'. The two downhill trails are to be more difficult in keeping with the original build which also made sense because the trail beside Nursery Rd was an easier grade."

Note this trail has been recently logged and is closed. Since this comment was posted - one of the Challenge trails has been reopened and the balance should be completed by July 2012

I enter this trail at its top off Radio Hut Road and it is my favourite section of trail yet. Like a fast BMX course I often get to the bottom and turn around and do it again. Will bite me one day.
