How many stars do you give this trail?

If you've only got a little time, and like grade 4 descents, this one is a beauty that takes in a couple of the newer trails in the Whakarewarewa Forest.

Start from the 'Black House' on Tarawera Rd. This is a weather-beaten cottage that used to be painted black. It is exactly 5km from the major intersection of Te Ngae and Tarawera Rds. The gravel parking area opposite the Black House can hold up to a dozen vehicles.

General overview:
Windy Rd - Side Winder climb - Direct Rd round the back to Hot X Buns - Hot X Buns to the mid point then out to Tumeke Trail. Up Pipeline and Direct Rds to the intersection of Direct and Hill Rds. Tukonohi or Whaki trail down then back to where you started from.

Detailed description:

Head down Windy Rd, and when you get to a 4 way intersection with Hill Rd heading uphill to your left - stay straight ahead. You'll climb a little, then descend on gravel road till you get to Side Winder trail on your left.

This is where the 'sharp' of the loop comes in. Side Winder is a steep singletrack climb which although being completely rideable - is a fair effort for most riders.

It ends at an intersection of Direct Rd. Head right (a little more uphill) on old forestry road - this eventually delivers you to the highest point of Direct Rd. A short descent and then Hot X Buns trail is directly in front of you.

Locals tip - at this point the trail forks and there is no sign. They both end up at the same place, but the right hand fork has some short climbs in it and covers more distance than the left hand fork. The left hand fork takes you straight into Hot X Buns' first descent and is by far the preferred option of most.

As you thread your way down Hot X Buns you'll come to a small Rotorua Trails Trust sign pointing to the left saying 'Tumeke'. Take that short link trail which will take you to the mid point of Direct Rd and straight into Tumeke trail.

Try to hit smooth lines down Tumeke, then at the bottom turn right - up Pipeline Rd, and up the steep (but short) gravel road to the intersection of Pipeline/Red Tank/Wash/Direct Rds.

Next leg is the gravel road climb up Direct Rd. which is not short, but is definitely steep. You will come to an intersection, the left turn still climbing, the right turn flattening out. Take the right and it will eventually take you to the Hill Rd intersection. Head left then take Tukonohi  or Whaki trail on your left.

After about 2km of bliss on either of those trails, turn right and head back towards Windy Rd and where you started from at the Black House car park area.

Take a map so you can follow along and really enjoy your ride without getting confused in the busy network of tracks:
